INTRODUCTION

With this homemade system you can turn dirty domestic water into water without residues. It is heated on a homemade stove and, after cooling in an inverted glass container, it drips into a tub. This water is not drinkable, but can be used to water plants.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the workshop is to contribute to our understanding of the water cycle and to increase our awareness of the fact that water is a scarce resource and is fundamental for life.

In this way, through a very simple experience, water that would normally end up in the sewage network is treated and reused; in short, it is given value. Small gestures can bring about big changes.

MATERIALS

A small alcohol (perforated aluminium can) or camping gas stove
– 1 fishbowl-type glass container
– Metal flowerpot stand
– 3 L-shaped metal shelf supports
– 1 plastic basin
– 1 circular dessert-type metallic tray mould
– Bottle of alcohol
Tools: cutter, wire, plyers…

STEPS TO FOLLOW

1.

ARRANGE the elements - Hold the stove in the centre of the tripod formed by 3 Ls and place the metal tray on top. Or use a camping gas stove instead. - Place the inverted glass fishbowl on the metal flowerpot stand. - Place the bowl under the artefact.

2.

EXECUTE the system - Fill the dessert tray with the dirty water. - Light the alcohol or camping gas stove. - Wait until the water boils, evaporates, condenses in the fishbowl and is deposited by gravity into the bowl.

Checkout the system
– Pour in the dirty water.
– The water should evaporate and condense in the form of droplets that are
collected by gravity in the bowl below.
– The dirt is collected in the tray.
– Check that the water comes out clear (not suitable for drinking).
