INTRODUCTION

Build this column of plastic bottles at home to reuse your domestic grey water. The water circulates through the different natural filters losing particles and residues on the way. The resulting water is not drinkable, but it can be used for cleaning and for watering plants.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the workshop is to contribute to our understanding of the water cycle and to increase our awareness of the fact that water is a scarce resource and is fundamental for life.

In this way, through a very simple experience, water that would normally end up in the sewage network is treated and reused; in short, it is given value. Small gestures can bring about big changes.

MATERIALS

  • Two 22-litre plastic containers
  • Two 11-litre plastic containers
  • 1-m-long, 32-mm diameter PVC pipes
  • 1 T-shaped PVC bypass pipe
  • Thick gravel (20 – 60 mm)
  • Medium-sized gravel (8 – 20 mm)
  • Fine gravel (2 – 8 mm)
  • Mosquito net
  • Cotton
  • Asparagus plant (Aspargus sprengeri) and water lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica)
Tools: cutter, sandpaper, saw, adhesive for PVC…

PASSES A SEGUIR

1.

PREPARE materials - Clean the gravel. - Make a hole in the containers in which to fit the PVC pipes. - Make small holes in the PVC pipes for the water to enter and exit. - Place the containers at different heights with their respective water entrance and exit pipes.

2.

SET OUT the materials - The 22-litre containers are used for the first (fat trap) and third (plant filter) steps. - The 11-litre containers are for the gravel filters and the final container is for storing the clean water (not suitable for drinking). - The system works both by the communicating vessels and by gravity.

3.

REFILL containers First container: the highest one, which acts as a communicating vessel to separate fats. A T-bend is placed with the outlet at the bottom. Second container: is filled with gravel in three layers. from fine to thick, and a perforated tube is placed in the lowest part to collect the water and channel it to the next container. Third container: with the aquatic plants, which are placed in the earth with a layer of gravel below. The perforated tube channels the water to the outlet. Fourth container: the water will fall in the form of a spring into the last container.

Checkout the system

– Pour in the dirty water into the first container.
– The water must go through the different layers in the containers until it pours out into the last one (for collection).
– Check that the water comes out clear (not suitable for drinking).
