NESTS

Ornithological biodiversity in a nesting period

Abel Julien, Nests Project
Catalan Institute of Ornithology

Intro

In winter and during migration, Barcelona’s parks attract a large number of birds of a wide variety of species. However, during breeding season, there are many bird species that are absent, despite the seemingly suitable habitat, due to a lack of appropriate nesting spots.

Objectives

Provide nesting spots for birds by setting up nesting boxes.
Increase the quality and quantity of avifauna in the city.

MATERIALS

  • Materials for building nest boxes (http://www.nius.cat/botiga, including PDF instructions to do it yourself)
  • Paper form for recording your actions
  • Guide to birds and their breeding locations

Steps to follow

1.

IDENTIFY a suitable place, considering the bird species in your urban surroundings.

2.

CHOOSE the most suitable boxes for the relevant species according to the guide.

3.

BUILD and position the nest boxes (http://www.nius.cat/pdf/fitxa_niu.pdf).

4.

COLLECT the data on the paper form.

5.
